We will focus on the role of repetition and transformation in two dimensions of the transference: the selfobject dimension and transference as organized by representational configurations.
These affect-laden descriptions of self and other constitute a series of representational configurations.
With the advent of symbolic and other capacities, representations of interactions that have been generalized (Stern, 1985) evolve into the more complex scripts (Stern, 1989), internal working models (Bowlby, 1969; Ainsworth, Blehar, Waters, and Wall, 1978; Stern, 1989), unconscious organizing principles (Stolorow, Brandchaft, and Atwood, 1987), model scenes (Lichtenberg, 1989; Lachmann and Lichtenberg, 1992) selfobject functions, and representational configurations of self, other, and self-with-other (Stern, 1983, 1985; Beebe and Lachmann, 1988a; Lachmann and Beebe, 1989).
In the treatment dyad, representations of experience can be delineated along two dimensions: selfobject and representational configurations.
We speculate that representational configurations provide the context for selfobject experiences and, in turn, selfobject experiences provide access to representational configurations.
